PanSIG 2024 Grants

Update (March 6, 2024)

We thank everyone for their grant applications. Notification emails were sent out on schedule:

  • Conference grants: March 1st; 
  • Research grants: January 31; 
  • Student grants, March 1st

If you applied but have not seen your notification, please check your spam folder, and also, search for an email from grants@pansig.org. If you still cannot find your notification, please write to that email.


The PanSIG 2024 Committee has prepared three types of grants: conference grants, research grants, and student grants. These grants will be awarded to applicants who do not have financial support from their institutions or workplace. The grants support the conference's goal of empowering educators to improve the quality of education. Applicants can only apply for one type of grant. In the case of applicants applying for two grants, only the first received application will be considered.

Conference Grants

The PanSIG 2024 Committee is offering Conference Grants of up to 50,000 yen for applicants who do not have financial support from their institutions or workplace.

HOW WILL APPLICATIONS BE APPRAISED?

The funds will be awarded based on the quality of the applications. Applications should explain why attending the conference will help the applicant develop professionally. The number of grants awarded is limited to a total of five.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE CONFERENCE GRANTS?

  • This is an open call. Even non-JALT members or previous members with an expired membership can apply for this grant. However, only JALT members can receive the funds. Because of this, Grant winners will be given a 10-day period to become JALT members or renew their membership.
  • Applicants working full-time or part-time in the field of language education are eligible. They can be working at any level: preschool to tertiary and adult education, as well as individual instructors working for themselves, companies, or language schools.
  • Applicants who are enrolled as part-time or full-time graduate students are also eligible.
  • Grant awardees must have a Japanese bank account.

CURRENT RESTRICTIONS

The following categories cannot apply for this grant:

  • Applicants who receive financial support from their institutions or workplace
  • Applicants who have previously applied for the PanSIG 2023 Research Grants

ARE RECIPIENTS REQUIRED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONFERENCE?

Yes. Successful conference grant recipients must contribute to the PanSIG 2025 Handbook by writing a report explaining how attending the conference changed their thinking or helped them develop professionally.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING?

Applicants must submit their applications by 23:59 (JST) on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Applicants will then be informed of the results by March 1, 2024. Recipients will be individually notified by email. Grant recipients will also be announced on the PanSIG website, social networks, and in the PanSIG 2024 Handbook.

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR THE CONFERENCE GRANTS?

The main schedule lasts from December 2023, to September 2024.

Research Grants

The PanSIG 2024 Committee is offering research grants of up to 40,000 yen. The number of grants awarded is limited to a total of 80,000 yen. The funds will be awarded based on the quality of the applications.

Successful research grant recipients are required to contribute to the conference by complying with all of the following steps:

  • Attend peer-support sessions with members of the PanSIG 2023 Committee or members of relevant SIGs who will assist the applicants through their research process.
  • Attend PanSIG 2024 Conference in Fukui at their own expense and present the ongoing research they are working on.
  • Submit a report on the outcome of their research to the PanSIG 2024 Committee.

The successful applicants may also submit a paper on the results of their research for consideration for a JALT publication.

JALT members that are in good standing by the application deadline. Please confirm your membership status before applying.

  • Applicants working full-time or part-time in the field of language education are eligible. They can be working at any level: preschool to tertiary and adult education, as well as individual instructors working for themselves, companies, or language schools.
  • Applicants who are enrolled as part-time or full-time graduate students are also eligible.
  • Grant awardees must have a Japanese bank account.

The main research schedule lasts from December 2023 to September 2024. Peer-support session dates will be decided on a one-to-one basis.

Student Grants

The funds will be awarded based on the quality of the applications. Applications should explain why attending the conference will help the applicant develop professionally. The number of grants awarded is limited to a total of three.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE STUDENT GRANTS?

  • Applicants who are part-time or full-time students in the field of language education are eligible.
  • Applicants can be undergraduate students or graduate students.
  • Applicants have to attend PanSIG 2024 Conference in person on May 25th and 26th, and submit a report to the Conference Committee.
  • Applicants have to be current JALT members.
  • Applicants have to be students at the time of the conference (May 24-26)
  • Grant awardees must attend the forum held by the SPIN (Student Peer Interaction Network) Committee.
  • Grant awardees must have a Japanese bank account.

ARE RECIPIENTS REQUIRED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONFERENCE?

WHAT CAN THE WINNERS USE THE GRANTS FOR?

Student Grants winners are allowed to use the grants to pay the following:

  • Travel to/back from Fukui University of Technology
  • Travel between the accommodation and Fukui University of Technology
  • Accommodation for Saturday night (up to 10,000 yen)
