Special event: From Lab to Classroom: A Showcase of Custom Made AI Applications in Language Learning

This AI technology showcase displays a number of current and past research projects designed and developed by Euan Bonner and Ryan Lege in the Centre for Learning and Teaching Innovation (LTI) tech lab at Kanda University of International Studies. It showcases some of the potential affordances of incorporating generative-AI into application design for EFL student use across all four skill sets. Some of the most notable applications on show include: 

  • AI Graded Viewers ("AI TV"). This project tackles the disparity between level appropriate written and video content availability for language learners. While students have access to extensive graded reader libraries with carefully controlled vocabulary and grammar levels, equivalent video content remains scarce. This project leverages AI to generate comprehensible video content that matches specific proficiency levels with desired topics, complete with integrated comprehension and vocabulary assessments and progress tracking. 
  • The "Pecha" Language Practice Support system enhances the effectiveness of informal language practice sessions at EFL facilities. Traditional student-teacher consultations, while valuable, often lack systematic documentation due to the dynamic nature of these interactions. This AI-powered solution automatically captures and structures session content, generating summaries, action items, and provides both students and teachers with diarized records of their discussions and progress. Additionally the application provides optional suggestions and advice throughout the session. This application is supported by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Hayashi-ULVAC MISTI Seed Fund. 
  • The AI-Assistant Teacher Project ("AI Tutor") addresses the common challenge of providing timely support to students inside and outside of class hours. This custom web app serves as a knowledge repository for specific lesson content, allowing students to verify their understanding and ask questions without the anxiety of interrupting class or the delays associated with email communication. The system provides immediate, contextually relevant responses based on slides, worksheets and lesson plans submitted to it by teachers.
